Stinger handling system

Most offshore construction vessels (derrick lay vessels) used for the installation of subsea pipelines have both pipe-lay and heavy-lift functionalities. Ulstein stinger handling system designs provide a new level of effectivity and performance for demanding pipe laying operations with its cutting-edge solutions such as the compact chain-type stinger handling system, which has been awarded the biannual IRO Innovation Prize.

Chain-type Stinger Handling System

A major benefit of the concept is the substantially reduced time it takes to install or dismount the chain system, compared to the time required to install or dismount a standard cable system. Other important benefits are increased overall operational uptime of the vessel, the considerable higher capability to absorb up-lift and the simple control system.

Key benefits

Time savings

Substantially reduced time to install or dismount the chain system, compared to the time required to install or dismount a standard cable system.

Operational uptime

The system provides increased vessel operational uptime.

High capability

Considerable higher capability to absorb up-lift.

A-frame Stinger Handling System

The Ulstein A-frame Stinger Handling System design was developed in close collaboration between our mission equipment and ship design specialists. This allowed us to achieve the best integration between the equipment and the vessel interfaces, such as the main crane and pipe-line firing line. To date, two systems have been manufactured, installed and in operation on the 'Sapura-Kencana 1200' and 'Sapura-Kencana 3500' vessels.

Key benefits

Integrated design

The integrated design approach offers the best balance in functionality.

Increased functionalities

Next to Stinger adjustment as a primary functionality, the A-frame allows efficient wire handling in Abandonment and Recovery (A&R) operations.

Enhanced reliability

We offer our knowledge and track record in the development and engineering of pipe-lay systems to our clients in order to develop the most reliable systems.
