Shipyard collaboration on standard auxiliary ships for the Norwegian Navy

The Royal Norwegian Navy has an ambition to acquire series‑produced, standardised naval vessels. This requires ships that are versatile, robust and future‑oriented, yet cost‑effective to build. Few shipyards in Norway can meet this challenge. Together, Larsnes Mek. Verksted (Larsnes) and Ulstein Group (Ulstein) have extensive experience and strong references in the design, construction, and maintenance of vessels. They collaborate to offer a solution that ensures the efficient production of naval ships.

Complete competence and capacity

The shipyard collaboration combines leading design expertise, reliable European hull production and with efficient yard capacities, and an established supply chain in Norway. Choosing a Norwegian yard is vital for value creation: A shipbuilding order placed with a Norwegian yard typically results in 80% of the value created among Norwegian suppliers, and one yard job generates 5–6 additional jobs.

Together, Larsnes and Ulstein have delivered 65 vessels ranging from 36 to 160 metres over the past 15 years, averaging four vessels per year. The yards have experience in both newbuilds and parallel lifecycle services for working ships.

The combined capacity enables the design, engineering, construction, testing, and completion of all 28 standard vessels for the Navy, as well as full lifecycle support, including repairs, maintenance, upgrades, and digital services, to ensure optimal operations.

Experience and adaptability

Larsnes / Ulstein have been involved in service and aftermarket work for ships operated by the Navy, and have extensive experience entering new markets and delivering complex vessels with stringent requirements. One example is Ulstein’s recent entry in the cruise, where the company has set a new standard for advanced expedition ships.

As the partners now enter the defence segment, this ability to adapt and transform is crucial. We will use our experience from civilian vessels, and work closely with the customer and specialised subcontractors for weapon systems to meet military requirements.

The most critical aspect is the integration of military systems into civilian platforms, which requires structured collaboration, clear interfaces and close dialogue with defence stakeholders. We will establish dedicated project teams with expertise in security, class rules and military standards to ensure safe and efficient integration.

Shipbuilding cooperation

The partnership includes cooperation with hull producers in NATO‑member Poland (Gdansk and Gdynia). Both Larsnes and Ulstein operate modern, future‑oriented facilities among the most efficient in Northern Europe, featuring covered dry docks, specialised workshops and highly skilled personnel.

At both locations, there is potential for expansion, ensuring scalable capacity to meet the Navy's needs and any future fleet growth. Geographically, the yards are situated at the heart of Norway’s most important maritime cluster, with naturally sheltered harbours at the transition between the North Sea and the Norwegian Sea.

Lifecycle support

Together, Larsnes / Ulstein represent a robust and future‑proof solution for the Navy’s lifecycle support needs, offering remote monitoring and predictive maintenance.

With the combination of first‑class facilities, expansion potential, digital solutions and delivery capability, Larsnes and Ulstein position themselves as reliable partners for developing Norway’s naval vessels of the future.
