Experience and philosophy
Every vessel from Ulstein is the result of engineering excellence combined with a philosophy that emphasises functionality, modularity and standardisation. The goal is to create platforms that can be adapted to a wide range of missions, from surveillance and logistics to search, rescue and NATO operations.

Design strategy and key features
The design strategy behind these concepts is to develop an efficient maritime platform with a flexible deck arrangement that can be tailored to the varied mission requirements the vessels will face throughout their service lives. Adaptability is a fundamental premise, and the concepts are designed to be easy to maintain, upgrade and update, enabling them to meet future needs effectively.
Some of the unique features of these concepts include:
- Flexible platform deck:
- An open aft deck provides space for versatile configurations, while the integrated skidding transport system enables rapid mobilisation and demobilisation of equipment, goods and components.
- Outstanding seakeeping
- The X‑BOW® is a proprietary hull design that delivers superior seakeeping, reduced fuel consumption and lower emissions. This ensures efficient operations regardless of weather conditions, reduced noise and improved comfort for crews.
- Energy-efficient operations:
- The ULSTEIN® POWER VSG is a propulsion and energy solution offering high operational flexibility and energy efficiency. This solution supports both current requirements and future demands for energy-efficient operations.
- Safe, comfortable and attractive working environment:
- As civilian as possible: Recruitment is critical to secure the future operation of these vessels. The ships are designed for minimal motion, and cabins and common areas are close to commercial standards to enhance the vessel’s attractiveness as a workplace.

Capacity and delivery
Ulstein combines solid technical expertise with the ability to develop new practical solutions. Founded in 1917, Ulstein has a proven track record of more than 300 newbuilds. Since introducing its new design series in 2000, the company has delivered over 50 vessels from its own yard and more than 100 through partner yards worldwide, demonstrating the capability, capacity and reliability to provide complex vessel solutions at scale.
The ambition behind developing these standardised vessels is not only to supply 28 ships to the Norwegian Navy, but to establish a new standard for naval operations and strengthen Norway’s shipbuilding industry.
Norwegian identity and strategic value
Ulstein is rooted in Norwegian competence and innovation. With experience in advanced commercial ship design and the ability to meet military requirements, Ulstein develops vessels that deliver flexibility, readiness and long service life.
For the Navy, this is not just about new ships. It is also about securing a fleet tailored for future operations.
Ulstein looks forward to further developing these concepts together with the Norwegian Coast Guard and the Royal Norwegian Navy to realise a series of standardised naval vessels with commercial solutions.
