Yno 1 - Elna

Starting in 1917 with repairs and ship lengthenings, and becoming an agent for the Rapp engines, the company experienced a great deal of work in its first years. Then came the regression in the 1930s, followed by WW2. The only major work during this period started in 1944 with the complete rebuild of 'Elna'.

The development progress in Norway that had started around 1930, came to an abrupt end with World War 2, which in Norway commenced in spring 1940. The business activities came to a halt, and each one was busy to get oriented in the new situation, plow the soil and grow potatoes. Slowly, the work life restarted, but everything was controlled and restricted, and materials such as wood, iron and steel were hard to get. Most work at the company was maintenance work, as it was difficult to get permission for newbuildings, yet there were plenty of work tasks. This came as a result that most larger companies working with ship construction and mechanical work were partly taken over or at least being under control by the occupational power. Despite controls and frequent inspections, the workers were never forced to work under command at this company. It was probably too small and unimportant, which was beneficial to the fishing and freight fleet that needed repairs and maintenance.

The only major work at Ulstein mek. during this period was started in autumn 1944. The Myrset brothers from Kristiansund had a sloop they wanted to be converted. They'd rather have a new vessel, but were not permitted to. They were, however, allowed to repair the old one. The boat was demolished and rebuilt, and it was ultimately turned into a new boat, with only some spun hooks midships remaining of the old boat. Basically, 'Elna' is yard number 1 from Ulstein mek. Verksted. The boat was about 80 feet, elaborated and well equipped.

The first 10 builds at Ulstein were carried out in much the same manner, as major modifications. It is yard number 11, 'Torulf', which is counted as the first real newbuilding from Ulstein mek.
