Working at Ulstein Design & Solutions B.V.

We design and develop game changing offshore vessels for the real world. Sometimes brilliantly simple, sometimes necessarily complex, always engineered with purpose. Our work combines creative naval architecture with practical innovation and a clear drive for sustainable performance.

We partner with owners and operators across the entire vessel lifecycle. From early studies and concept design to class ready packages, every newbuild is shaped around mission needs, site conditions and long term efficiency.

For existing fleets, we deliver smart upgrades that extend service life and strengthen capability. Life extension, repowering, hybrid and alternative fuel solutions and mission equipment integration all help clients operate safer, cleaner and more competitively.

Through life support, we help clients keep their vessels reliable and ready for the future.

Inside Ulstein Rotterdam: real-world design

In our Rotterdam office we design complex offshore vessels with a mix of creativity, technical depth and close collaboration. With a team of around 25 professionals the environment is open, supportive and hands-on. People involve each other early, share insights easily and enjoy tackling challenges together.

Ship design becomes powerful when everything connects

Designing offshore vessels means bringing structures, systems, stability and mission equipment together into one coherent whole. It requires creativity, engineering judgement and the ability to look across disciplines.

We work closely from the first sketch onwards, exploring options, challenging assumptions and combining perspectives. The result is vessels that perform reliably in demanding offshore conditions. Ship design here is both a craft and a continuous process of refinement.

We work closely with clients throughout the entire design process

Our vessels operate in harsh offshore environments, which makes early and continuous alignment essential. Together with clients around the world we explore layouts, capacities, systems and operational constraints, refining the design step by step.

This practical dialogue keeps development grounded in reality and leads to designs that meet demanding specifications, fit complex global operations and match how vessels are used on deck, in transit and offshore.

Integrated engineering that keeps the whole vessel in view

Offshore vessels are complex systems. A structural decision affects equipment placement, a systems choice influences stability and mission equipment can reshape the entire arrangement. That is why we think across disciplines from the very start.

We move naturally between detail and overview, ensuring that every part contributes to a coherent whole. This integrated approach keeps our designs robust, efficient and ready for the environments in which they will operate.

A culture that enables good engineering

Our Rotterdam office is small enough for people to work closely together and large enough to take on major international projects. The atmosphere is informal, supportive and open. People share knowledge freely, help without hesitation and combine focus with humour.

Communication is direct and ideas are explored quickly. It is an environment where you can grow fast, deepen your expertise and enjoy your work every day.

Innovation grows naturally when knowledge flows

Many improvements start with engineers who spot opportunities during projects. When an idea shows potential we develop it, test it and often implement it in real client designs.

This curiosity-driven way of innovating keeps us inventive and agile. Smart, practical ideas evolve into meaningful solutions that enhance vessel performance and offshore operations.
