Ship history

In 2010, the US-based Global Industries (now Technip) took delivery of the first of two deep-water derrick pipelay vessels, Global 1200, from Keppel Singmarine, Singapore. The vessel has been designed by Ulstein Design & Solutions BV, and is a customised version of Ulstein's SOC 600 design.

In 2015, the vessel was upgraded at Damen Shiprepair Rotterdam. The major upgrade works were divided into three packages: dry-docking for Special Periodical Survey and various maintenance, repair works, and modifications to upgrade the vessel's DP capability, and various pipelay equipment upgrades for future projects. In this project, Ulstein was contracted directly by Technip to design and engineer the upgrade and modification work, while Damen Shiprepair contracted Ulstein to support the docking procedure and calculations, involving special 4m high dock blocks to facilitate maintenance on all thrusters.

2025, Jul: Marine Platforms Limited acquired a majority stake in Huan Qiu. After the acquisition, MarinePlatforms has a 51% stake in the vessel, which will be renamed the 'African Huan Qiu 1200'. The remaining 49% ownership is retained by DS GLOBAL OFFSHORE ENGINEERING SINGAPORE PTE LTD of Tianjin, China, with the full transfer expected to be finalised later in 2025.
This joint ownership agreement represents a major step in Marine Platforms’ global expansion strategy, enabling the company to deploy the vessel for EPIC and SURF projects worldwide. Under the collaboration, Marine Platforms will focus on projects across the Western Hemisphere, DS Global in the Far East, and both partners will jointly execute projects in the Middle East.
The African Huan Qiu 1200 is a DP2 pipelay and heavy-lift construction vessel built in 2010, with a solid track record on international subsea assignments. It is equipped with a 1,200Te crane, 800Te abandonment and recovery system, S-Lay pipelay capabilities, and accommodation for 264 personnel.
Marine Platforms and DS Global are confident that this partnership will enhance their collective ability to deliver efficient, cost-effective subsea solutions across key global markets. About Marine Platforms: An offshore value-driven services company, providing integrated subsea solutions across the Gulf of Guinea, with core competencies in subsea construction and installation, inspection, maintenance, and repair (IRM), well intervention services and asset integrity.  Source: Marine Platforms Acquires Majority Stake in Huan Qiu 1200 Pipelay Vessel - Marine Platforms
