The JSD6000 delivery: advancing deepwater operations

On May 28, 2024, the deepwater derrick lay vessel JSD6000 was delivered at the Shanghai Zhenhua Heavy Industries Co., Ltd. (ZPMC) shipyard to the operator SAIPEM

Ulstein Design & Solutions B.V. has been involved in the design of the JSD6000 deepwater derrick lay vessel from the beginning. The design process started off with a customisation of our SOC 5000 heavy lift vessel design to make her suitable for intended operations of the client which resulted in a vessel design with unique blend of heavy lift, S-lay and J-lay capabilities. The JSD6000 was developed further in the basic design phase before it was delivered to ZPMC to begin detail design and construction of the vessel.

During the construction phase Ulstein supported ZPMC and SAIPEM with design and consulting services to ensure the initial vessel requirements and design philosophy.

What makes this vessel truly unique, in addition to the revolving main crane with a 5,000 mt lifting capacity, is the combination of the S-lay system via a centre firing line below main deck and the J-lay system via a moonpool, located off-centre. This is a distinctive feature in Ulstein Design & Solutions BV's designs, which allows for a large, unobstructed deck area and below-deck pipe fabrication.

Further, the combination of heavy lift, S-Lay capabilities and J-Lay functionality via a large, off-centre moonpool, allows the vessel to serve deepwater and SURF markets as well as shallow-water EPCI projects.

The JSD6000 vessel is the third customised version of the ULSTEIN SOC 5000 design after the 'Seven Borealis' and 'Aegir'.

Turning visions into reality is at the heart of what we do, and it feels particularly rewarding when big projects such as the JSD6000 are ready for delivery. We wish JSD6000 and SAIPEM a safe and prosperous journey ahead.
