The jury's statement
“Olympic Boreas represents a groundbreaking project that challenges standards and sets a new direction for the maritime industry. With its focus on environmentally friendly solutions and energy efficiency, the ship is prepared for the future with the possibility of methanol operation, which can make it carbon neutral. Olympic Boreas has been a development project for many companies in the maritime cluster, and through new technology pilots, it has created ripple effects for the entire industry. The jury describes the ship as the ‘four-wheel drive of the sea,’ the first to be delivered with the TWIN X-STERN design – a sign of forward-looking innovation. This project elevates the suppliers and the maritime industry through healthy competition and groundbreaking solutions. We look forward to following the continued journey of Olympic Boreas and what it will mean for the future of shipping and sustainable solutions at sea.”
Energy efficiency is key
This is the first vessel delivered with the TWIN X-STERN solution. In Ulstein, we like to refer to it as a '4-wheel-drive' for the ocean, with main propellers positioned at the fore and aft.
Our chief designer explaining the TWIN X-STERN: Watch film
This is the first TWIN X-STERN® vessel delivered, and with a fully integrated power and automation system from Ulstein, it combines large batteries with variable-speed generators for optimised power production operating within the sweet spot of energy efficiency.
This results in maximised energy-efficient operations, manoeuvring capacities, and operability.
Further, the vessel is prepared for methanol fuel for low emissions and has available space for additional battery capacity.
