In a landmark deal, Ulstein Design & Solutions AS has secured its largest aftermarket design contract to date for the cable-laying vessel Orient Adventurer. We have worked with Ulstein before and find the people very professional. Ulstein knows the vessel well, and it's an insurance to know that everything will work when doing a conversion. Choosing Ulstein Design & Solutions makes planning and installation a lot easier. It'll shorten the schedule. And for us, schedule and successful delivery to customers is everything,

Grant Hermanus, technical manager at DFO.

The vessel is an ULSTEIN SX121 design by Ulstein Design & Solutions AS, originally delivered as an offshore construction newbuild, yard number 300 from Ulstein Verft.
Upon delivery in 2014, the vessel was equipped with a Huisman VLS tower (vertical lay system) positioned in the potential future cable-laying area. In 2024, the vessel was upgraded with a cable-laying system to expand its services into the growing offshore renewables sector.

Ulstein's aftermarket services ensure that the conversion process meets the high standards required for cable-laying operations. As a result of the design and engineering contract, the Orient Adventurer will undergo an extensive conversion. The tower equipment will be relocated to new rooms on the main deck, A, and B decks. The vessel will also be equipped with a foundation for a W2W (walk-to-work) gangway system and a 3,000-tonne cable carousel from Huisman. The conversion will be completed in 2025, and the vessel will be ready for operational work in 2026.

The conversion of the Orient Adventurer into a cable-laying vessel highlights Ulstein's expertise in aftermarket services and vessel conversions. This project showcases the potential for repurposing and upgrading existing vessels to meet the demands of the growing offshore renewables sector. This sets a precedent for similar projects, encouraging other shipowners to consider upgrading their fleets for new market opportunities. The flexibility and adaptability demonstrated in this project can be applied to a wide range of vessels, regardless of their original builder.
