Night at the oil field

Studying ships in operations

Understanding operations is part of the Ulstein innovation strategy. Field trips are a structured approach to gaining valuable insight into a ship's operational aspects. Ulstein representatives have been on board several vessels during operations in the North Sea, and their findings are used to further develop our designs.

The photos below are from a field trip onboard the OCV vessel Seven Viking in February 2015. Equinor contracts the vessel. During the six-day field trip, the ship completed various subsea assignments in the North Sea. These included gas sampling, valve opening and closing, and subsea inspections.

Field study on our volume design - the PX121

Field studies were carried out on board two platform supply vessels of the PX121 design during 2014 and 2015. Both trips were in the winter season, and the weather was sometimes harsh, with storms and wind speeds above 50 knots.

Our findings have been used for a modularisation project on the PX121 vessels.

Mastering walk-to-work operations

The total number of walk-to-work (w2w) vessel designs and redesigns by Ulstein now count 22, of which 14 are currently in operation. In average, these vessels perform repair and maintenance on more than 5,000 turbines – every year!
That makes a stunning 95,000+ gangway connections!

The heavy lift pipelay vessel, ‘JSD 6000’, is a customised ULSTEIN SOC5000 design. The 215m long DP3 vessel is equipped with a 5,000t revolving main crane and will be cable of performing J-lay and S-lay pipelay work in max water depths of 3,000m.. The combination of heavy lift and S-Lay capabilities together with J-Lay functionality via a large, off-centre moonpool, allows the vessel to serve deepwater and SURF markets as well as shallow-water EPCI projects.
