Ulstein Verft has delivered the Service Operation Vessel ‘WINDEA JULES VERNE’ to Bernhard Schulte Offshore GmbH. The hybrid vessel will work at the Merkur Offshore Wind farm, where she will be operating for GE Renewable Energy.
Building a battery hybrid vessel for the offshore wind industry
Ulstein Verft has constructed the WINDEA JULES VERNE, its third Service Operation Vessel for shipowner Bernhard Schulte. Following her delivery in June 2020, the battery hybrid vessel will be working for GE Renewable Energy on the offshore wind farm Merkur Offshore in Germany.
The WINDEA JULES VERNE is equipped with a large, centrally positioned W2W motion-compensated gangway & elevator tower for personnel and cargo transfers.

The Service Operation Vessel WINDEA JULES VERNE has been tested over several days. On a sea trial, all systems are tuned and tested in the presence of the designer, yard and owner representatives, and the results duly noted and testified by certified controllers. The ship is now in her final construction phase.
Bernhard Schulte's Offshore wind newbuild, yno 315 at Ulstein Verft, will be named 'WINDEA JULES VERNE'. The vessel has received her name after one of the world's most popular adventure writers, who was born in Nantes where GE’s Offshore Wind business is located. The vessel will work for GE at the Merkur wind farm.
The next Service Operation Vessel (SOV) for Bernhard Schulte, Yard Number 315 at Ulstein Verft, was floated out from the yard’s dock hall on Sunday afternoon, 26 January 2020. The hybrid vessel has now been positioned in the outer dock for further outfitting and testing.
The Energy Management System on Bernhard Schulte’s next offshore wind vessel was recently tested in the lab at Ulstein. Soon, real-life testing will commence when the vessel leaves for sea trial.
Yno 315 at Ulstein Verft, the 'Windea TBN', is under construction for Bernhard Schulte. The Service Operation Vessel for the offshore wind industry was docked into our dock hall on 8 December 2019. The paint process is currently well underway.
The construction of Bernhard Schulte’s third offshore wind vessel designed by Ulstein is well underway at Ulstein Verft. Initiate work tasks such as steel outfitting, mechanical outfitting, electrical steel work, piping and insulation, have now commenced, and cable pulling will start within a few days.
In cooperation with shipowner Bernhard Schulte, Ulstein Design & Solutions has designed a diesel-electric propulsion system assisted by batteries to reduce operating hours on the main engines, save fuel and reduce environmental footprint. The hybrid system has been installed on the WINDEA JULES VERNE at Ulstein Verft.
